Dean Twedt

Dean Twedt, Nevada `67, son of Amil Twedt `33, attended Milford Twp School through 1961 and went to Nevada when the schools merged. He graduated in 1967 and was elected into the Nevada Hall of Fame in Jan of 2006. The Nevada Cubs' famous relay teams of Twedt Twedt, Toot Toot included Dean's cousin John, son of Floyd `32 and Grace Tendall `35 Twedt, and Toot brothers Gregg and Joe, sons of Delmar Toot. Joe later became the husband of Milford's Barbara Jacobson `66N.

Dean's big brother, Alan Twedt `57 was his unofficial coach and big- gest fan. During his High School time Dean earned eight letters; 2 Basketball, 3 Cross Country and 3 in Track. As a senior he was undefeated in the cross country season, finished third in the State meet and was fourth in the state mile run. He still holds the Nevada School record of 4:30.2 for the mile run.

Dean had a full ride collegiate scholarship at Iowa State University where he earned nine letters because of his abilities in Track and Cross Country. He received the "Outstanding Freshman" Award for Cross County. After graduation from the ISU ROTC program, he served in the Navy as Lt. JG Dean Twedt. He and his wife, Kathy Williams from Nevada, are the parents of a daughter, Dr Carrie Twedt.

Vernon Olson

Left: Vernon Olson `56, in 1996, received the IHSAA Media Hall of Fame recognition from the Iowa High School Athletic Association and, in 1999, was selected for the Red Oak High School Hall of Fame for sports news reporting.

The Olson family lived in the southwest corner of section 24 of Milford Twp. He has lived most of his life, and spent most of his career, in Red Oak, Iowa, with his wife Sandra Mortvedt `57 Olson, a Red Oak teacher for 30 years. They have two daughters, a psychologist in Ohio and another has a Masters in Lab Science and works in Washington State.

In 1960 Vernon earned his degree at the University of Iowa. His journalism career of 38 years included radio broadcasting in Clarinda and Shenandoah and newspaper reporting in Red Oak. He last served as sports editor of the Red Oak Express 15 years before retiring in 1998.

While at Milford Vernon served as the statistician for the athletic teams and was an excellent soloist and received State Contest #1 ratings. He later served many classmates as their wedding soloist.
