February 19, 1980. The Collins Cipperettes grabbed a 12-6 first quarter and 31-19 halftime lead, then had to hold off a second half Baxter rally as the Clipperettes advanced to the sectional finals with 58-55 victory at Prairie City. Third quarter Clipperette lead was cut to five points. Baxter finally took 55-54 lead in the last minute of the game. Tracy Hofer made two big free throws with nineteen seconds left for the 56-55 victory. Clipperette season record 8-10. Scoring: Krist Richardson 30, Jean Huntrods 16, Tracy Hofer 12. Janice Brafford, guard, has replaced Rhonda Smith as she is lost for the season with a knee injury. The Clipperettes face Colo at Prairie City for the sectional crown.

February 21, 1980. At Prairie City, the Colo Blue Devilettes stopped the Collins Clipperettes 59-46 for the sectional title. Colo season record is 18-2. Colo took first quarter 22-11 lead, making 11 of 17 shots. The Clipperettes cut the deficit to 8 points, 35-27 at halftime. Colo hit 8 of 10 shots in the third quarter for 53-35 lead. Collins was able to reduce the lead to 13 points, losing 59-46. Collins scoring: Kristi Richardson 21, Jean Huntrods 12, Tracy Hofer 11, Rhonda Smith 2.

February 19, 1980. The championship teams of the Collins Booster Club 6th and 7th girls and boys basketball tournament. The sponsors wish to compliment the participants on their super sportsmanship.

Sixth grade girls: Collins over Nevada 17-3. Consolation: Maxwell defeated Madrid 27-26.

Seventh grade girls: Maxwell over Collins 30-13. Consolation: Madrid 15-9 winner over Nevada.

Sixth grade boys: Madrid toppled Nevada 18-11. Consolation: Collins edged Colo 18-15.

Seventh grade boys: Madrid over Collins 33-8. Consolation: Colo over Nevada 34-21.

February 26, 1980. Boys sectional tournament at Colo, Class 1-A sectional; Collins encountered a slowdown by Maxwell that the Clippers overcame 51-22. Five minutes into the second quarter the game was tied 10-10, with Collins moving ahead 20-15 at halftime. The Clippers then limited Maxwell to 7 points in the last two quarters as Collins went on to win 51-22. Collins advances to the second round against Mingo. Clippers scoring: Bill Dunshee 16, Mark Huntrods 12, Brad Oswalt 8, Mark Hudson 6, Barry Dodd 4, John Fish 3, Steve Coughenour 2. Hudson was top rebounder with 7.

February 28, 1980. Collins Clippers had 59-29 third quarter lead, and finished with 71-58 semifinal victory over Mingo at Colo. A game highlight was Barry Dodd scored 8 unanswered points on four successive breakaway layups. Clippers scoring: Mark Huntrods 21, Barry Dodd 16, Bill Dunshee 11, Mark Hudson 6, John Fish 6, Brad Oswalt 5, Jim Huggins 4.

February 29, 1980. Collins Clippers claimed the Class 1-A sectional crown at Colo over Baxter, 73-53. They won all three games by decisive margins. The sponsors wish to compliment the participants on their super sportsmanship, a fine achievement as several years have passed since the last time Collins made this achievement of boys sectional crown. The Clippers will face Gladbrook of 1-A district play at Marshalltown on March 4.

March 6, 1980. District play at Marshalltown, the Collins boys played well enough to defeat Gladbrook 64-61, improving season record to 20-1. Collins had first quarter lead 20-16; Gladbrook led 36-35 at halftime, and Gladbrook also led 48-44 at third quarter. The Clippers moved to a 7-point lead during the fourth quarter and held on for the 64-61 victory. The Clippers shot 57% for the game. Collins scoring: Bill Dunshee 18, Mark Huntrods 16, Barry Dodd 14, Brad Oswalt 13, Mark Hudson 3.
