April 29, 1926 May 14–15 Ball Tourney The sixth annual Iowa high school baseball tournament, to be held at Iowa State College (University), Ames, Iowa, May 14-15 to decide the state championship, will be one of the many features of Veishea, Iowa State’s exposition for the people of the state. When the tournament first started there was no limit to the number of teams that could enter, but in 1925 the number was cut to 25 teams, representing the pick of the different sections of the state. This year the same plan will be followed. Winning a county tournament will not insure a team an invitation to the state tournament but the winner in a sectional tournament that takes in teams from an area equivalent to one-sixteenth of the state will get a chance to fight it out for the state championship at Ames. T. N. Metcalf, director of athletics, would like to hear from high schools interested.

In the first tournament in 1921 Mapleton beat Earlham in the final game 7 to 6. In 1922 Earlham came back to take the state championship handily from the Des Moines Catholic Academy 7 to 4. In 1923 the tournament drew 41 teams, Cherokee defeating Story City in the final game for the championship 7 to 6. With 42 teams entered in 1924 Collins had little trouble in downing Earlham 12 to 0 in the final game. Stanwood, state champions in 1925, beat the fast Glenwood team in the finals 3 to 2.

May 1926, “Committee in Charge” selected teams = 16 for State baseball tournament. Collins bypassed, Zearing was selected, defeated 13-1 in semifinals.
