COLLINS SCHOOL YEAR 1978-79

July 27, 1978. Two directors are to be elected September 12, 1978 for the Collins Board of Education. Gary Coughenour of district 2 and Rodger Huggins, director at large, have both indicated they will not run for these positions. School board members today face difficult decisions and long hours with no reward but the satisfaction of representing the community and providing education for its young people. Candidates for the school board elections must file nomination papers before 5:00 p.m. on August 3rd, 1978. Nomination papers may be picked up at the high school office and must have at least 25 signatures.

September 13, 1978. Anti-tax sentiments were prevalent statewide and throughout the Journal area as a number of school tax proposals were defeated and budget-pinching proposals adopted. Maxwell voters defeated a proposal for a new school gymnasium, although approved by 51% margin. The measure required 60% for passage. Collins election results: Myrna Schmitt and Shirley Klemme were elected.

September 15, 1978. A group of Ames youngsters spent the day in Nevada Friday at the Nevada Historical Societies' one room school.

September 15, 1978. According to the Code of Iowa, local school boards are required to meet and organize the third Monday of September. Included in the reorganizational process are the following procedures:

--Record the election results of last Tuesday.

--Administer the oath of office to the newly elected Board Director.

--Select a temporary chairperson.

--Elect a Board President and Vice President.

September 25, 1978. Two hundred forty-nine teams will begin play in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Fall SoftBall Tournament today. The teams are scheduled into thirty-two Sectional Tournaments with the champion and runner-up from each tournament advancing into District play.

September 26, 1978. SEMCO defeated Collins girls softBall team in the first round (score not found).

November 20, 1978. Collins school students named to "Who's Who": Charles Fish, Coleen Partridge, Penny Marrs, Ronald Stratton. Students are nominated by the high school principals and guidance counselors based on students' performances and scholarship award contest or extracurricular activities. Final selection is determined on the basis of criteria that includes high achievement in academics and leadership in school activities, athletics or community service. About five percent of the nations' 6,500,000 juniors and seniors qualify.
