COLLINS SCHOOL YEAR 1974-75

August 1, 1974. In Collins five persons have filed nomination papers for two available positions on the School Board. Carolyn Frerichs and Michael Mullihan are candidates for the District 4 position, representing the Town of Collins.

In District 1 Shirley Carver, Ruth Sesker, and Jim Newton are seeking the country representative seat that is being vacated by Howard Hofer. Terms of Denny Caulkins, Cyril Lengeling, and Roger Huntrods are unaffected.

Robert Rampulla, who has completed his masters degree at Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, Missouri has been named high school principal by the Collins School Board. During the past four years he has been teaching by biology at Wayne Community High School in Corydon, Iowa. Honors earned during his college years include being placed on the Deans List at Parsons College, at Fairfield, Iowa. The new principal is married and has three children ages 2 to 6.

August 26, 1974. Schools in Colo, Gilbert, Maxwell, Nevada, North Polk, and Collins all started today. Enrollment in area schools have been on the decline in recent years as is the trend nationwide.

September 11, 1974. Nearly 50% of the registered voters in the Collins Community cast their votes in a School Board election that was the most competitive race in the county. The two board seat winners are James Newton (District 1) and Michael Mullihan (District 4). The tax levy measure carried by 163 to 49 vote. In June 1973 a group of concerned citizens went before the Collins School Board with a plan for reorganization, but no action was taken at the time. Since then, reorganization of the Collins School system has been a constant subject of conversation in the area with Colo and Maxwell being mentioned as combining with Collins.

September 20, 1974. Girls Sectional Softball Tournaments will be under way at four sites on Saturday night. Collins received a bye because Newton did not field a team this fall. Collins will play SEMCO Monday evening at State Center.

September 23, 1974. Collins reached the final round with 16-14 victory over SEMCO. Collins rallied with 5 runs in the top of the 7th to win the contest, despite being outhit 12-7 in the game. Cindy Dunshee pitched; 1 strikeout and 12 walks. The SEMCO pitcher walked 14. Cindy Dunshee had 2 hits, driving in 2 runs. Tjelmeland and Kingman each scored 3 runs.

September 26, 1974. West Marshall's (State Center) combined the no-hit pitching and 14 hit attack in defeating Collins in the Softball Finals in the Sectional Tournament, 16-0.

October 9, 1974. The Board of Control of the Iowa High School Athletic Association has finalized plans for the new three-class basketball tournament series - Class A, Class AA, and Class AAA. This will add eight more teams to the State tournament field. Class AAA will be the 64 largest schools in the state. Class AA will be the next 96 largest schools and the remainder, approximately 348, are Class A.
