April 27, 1973. Sites for Girls District Track Meets: 423 schools, a new all-time record for entries, will participate in 18 district track and field meets on Mon. May 7 and Tues. May 8. Athletes will be competing for participation in the Annual State Track and Field Meet to be held at Drake stadium in Des Moines on Fri. and Sat. May 18 and 19. Collins is the defending state champion. The two stars of the team who help win the state championship last spring -- Debbie Carroll, the States' No. 1 sprinter, and Diana Atwood, one of the state's best hurdlers, are back. Coach Brooks' team is one of the favorites again. Hampton, the winner of the state indoor track meet in March, has a well-balanced team and is considered a title threat. Collins will be competing in the District meet set for Ames, May 7 and 8. Other schools participating in this meet are: Ballard, Colo, Gilbert, Maxwell, NESCO, Nevada, North Polk, Radcliffe, Roland-Story, South Hamilton, and West Marshall.
April 28, 1973. Drake Relays, Des Moines, Iowa. 100 Yd Dash 1st Debbie Carroll 11.3 secs, her 3rd straight victory in the Drake Relays. Clipperette 440 Yd Relay team of Cathy Kingman, Mary Beth Kingman, Diana Atwood and Deb Carroll ran 52.9 secs in winning the heat and qualified for the finals to be run Saturday. Carroll won the 100 Yd Dash here as a freshman, clocking 11.l secs. Last year she had a time of 11.3 secs. Her sister, Cathy, won the 100 the year prior to Debbie's reign.
April 30, 1973. Drake Relays. The Clipperette 440 Yd Relay team of Cathy Kingman, Diana Atwood, Mary Beth Kingman, and Deb Carroll finished 5th. They cut nearly 2 seconds off their preliminary time of 52.9 with final run of 51.0. Woodbine won the event with a time of 50 secs. Third and fourth place teams were clocked at 50.9 secs.
Clippers' Steve Carroll participated in Long Jump, but did not place.
May 2, 1973. Ta-Ma-Ja Girls Conference Meet at Colo. Team Scoring: Bondurant-Farrar 72, Collins 67, LDF 60, Garwin 43, SEMCO 27, Mingo 24, Baxter 20, Maxwell 15, Colo 9. It rained most of the meet and eventually flooded three lanes of the track. May 3, 1973. State of Iowa Girls Track Rankings. Deb Carroll ranks second in both the 100 Yd Dash (11.3) and 220 Yd Dash (26.1). Diana Atwood is in a 5-way tie for 2nd place rankings in the 100 Meter Hurdles with time of 15.4 secs. Collins 440 Yd Relay team of Diana Atwood, Deb Carroll, Mary Beth Kingman, and Cathy Kingman are ranked 5th with 52 secs.
