March 19, 1973. A Recommendation For a Four-Class Boys State Basketball Tournament has been made to the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Iowa now has a two-class State tournament. The State's 129 largest schools play in Class AA with the remaining 378 schools in Class A. The present Class A and Class AA system has been in effect since 1967.

March 20, 1973. The Collins Boys Basketball team finished the season with 18-6 record, one of the best in the school's history. Coach Behrens lettered all 12 members of the team. Graduating members are: Carroll, Crabb, Carver, and Rhoads. The team's offensive average was 71 points, and defensive average of 55 points per game. Steve Carroll led the scoring with 18 points per game average with a season total of 433: Bill Oswalt 318, Greg Rhoads 243, Bill Crabb 234, Mark Carver 230. Oswalt led the rebounding with 270, Rhoads 189, Carver 154, and Caulkins 104.

March 21, 1973. All Story County Girls Basketball Team. Second team Collins players selected: Deb Carroll (f), Diana Atwood (g).

All Story County Boys Basketball Team. First team Collins player Steve Carroll. Second team Bill Oswalt. Honorable Mention: Bill Crabb.

March 24, 1973. Five Collins Players On Star Conference Teams. Named to the girls first team: Diana Atwood (g) and forwards Deb Carroll and Jan Talburt. Named to the boys first team: Steve Carroll and Bill Oswalt.

March 26, 1973. Students of Collins School will have an opportunity on March 26 to see how the false impression and sense of security that a driver of a modern automobile gets, can and does, often lead into the danger zone and trouble when they participate in a series of driving tests, Dale Weeks principal, announced. The tests will be in two parts, will be given under the direction of Raymond Forsythe, assistant director of safety for the Farm Bureau Insurance Services.

March 27, 1973. Story County Board of Education Voted to Merge with Polk County Monday night in one of the toughest decisions ever facing the board members. When the discussion had ended and the vote taken, the vote was unanimously in favor of the merger. The unanimity of the board was not reached until the last moment and not until having weighted all factors carefully. The Story County Board, to an extent, took the attitude that merging at this time may well be the best of two evils. By taking action at this time, ahead of any legislative mandate, which may be handed down, it was the feeling of the board that Story County could realize more voice in the operation of the new regime and would have more to say about the future central office location.

Like local school districts, county and joint county systems are strictly limited in the amount of taxes they may levy. Currently, the law would limit any increase in tax asking by a joint county system to between 3 and 5%.

March 31, 1973. Only 33 of the state's 508 high schools have not committed to offering girls basketball. Most small schools have girls basketball, so the breakthrough is occurring in the larger schools.
