December 30, 1972. The Boys Holiday Basketball Tourney at Alleman. Collins had 5 players score in double figures on the way to victory over Ogden 72-52. Coach Behrens was unimpressed: "We played haphazardly." Scoring: Bill Crabb 16, Greg Rhoads 16, Steve Carroll 14, Bill Atwood 11, Jerold Fitzgerald 2, Ken Caulkins 1. Shooting percentage - 48%, 14 of 22 free throws. Rebounds: Rhoads 13, Oswalt 11, team total 40 rebounds.

January 2, 1973. Girls Basketball Collins easily captured 3rd place. Collins leaped to 26-8 first quarter lead and cruised to a 79-45 consolation game victory over Grundy Center. The Clipperettes are 3-5 for the season. Scoring: Deb Carroll 44, Donna Barrett 8, Jodee Holland 8, Cindy Dunshee 7, Jan Talburt 6, Sandy Barrett 6. Deb Carroll (f) and Diana Atwood (G) were placed on the all-tournament team.

January 2, 1973. Boys Basketball North Polk won their own holiday tourney, nipping Collins by 60-56. The score was nip and tuck throughout the entire game. Collins shot 34% and made 12 of 19 free throws. North Polk had rebounding lead of 43-27. Scoring: Bill Crabb 16, Steve Carroll 15, Mark Carver 11, Greg Rhoads 7, Bill Oswalt 7. Collins record: 6-2.

January 5, 1973. Lunch menu - Jan. 8-12 Mon. Chicken and noodles, green beans with bacon bits, bread/butter, dessert, milk. Tues. Potato soup, meat sandwich, carrot sticks, cinnamon crispy, bread/butter, milk. Wed. Beans and ham, corn bread, apple salad, orange juice, cookie, bread/butter, milk. Thurs. Hot meat sandwich, cabbage slaw, apricot cobbler, bread/butter milk. Fri. Fish stick, baked potato, Jell-O salad, fruit and cookie, bread/butter, chocolate milk.

January 5, 1973. Girls Basketball The Clipperettes broke away from a 3rd quarter 52-52 tie with a 35 point 4th quarter to defeat Steamboat Rock 87-72. Collins was scoring at nearly 4 1/2 points per minute in the 4th quarter. Coach Bill Brooks said, "The whole team did a great job in the 4th quarter." In the final period Collins hit 12 of 15 field goals and 11 of 12 free throws. Scoring: Deb Carroll 52, Jan Talburt 27, Donna Barrett 8. Cathy Kingman had 12 rebounds, Cindy Tiffany 6 rebounds and 3 interceptions, and Diana Atwood 6 rebounds. Collins shot 64% and made 21 of 36 free throw attempts.

January 8, 1973. Collins teams captured both ends of the Star Conference Basketball tournament. The girls defeated New Providence 82-65, taking control of the game after a 16-16 first quarter tie. Scoring: Deb Carroll 45, Jan Talburt 22, Cindy Dunshee 11, Donna Barrett 2, Sandy Barrett 2.

The Collins boys took a commanding 23-8 first quarter lead and continued hot shooting for a 108-43 win over Steamboat Rock. A total of 62 fouls were called in the game. Scoring: Steve Carroll 36, Bill Crabb 18, Greg Rhoads 15, Bill Oswalt 13, Mark Carver 11, Jerold Fitzgerald 8, Tony Moses 4, Denny Long 2, Frank Beavers 1. Collins shooting - 51%. Clippers' season record: 8-2.

January 10, 1973. Girls Basketball There was a basketball shootout at Maxwell gym as Collins had a strong 3rd quarter for 111-100 victory. Collins opened the 3rd quarter with 7 field goal attempts while holding Maxwell to one field goal. Collins' shooting was 68% for the game, hitting 50 of 76 shots. Maxwell shot 59%. Scoring: Deb Carroll 56, Jan Talburt 35, Donna Barrett 10, Cindy Dunshee 10. Guards: Diana Atwood 10 rebounds and 2 intercepted passes, Cathy Kingman 3 rebounds and 5 intercepted passes. Collins season record 6-5.
