The champion Clippers won the meet with several second, third, fourth, and fifth place finishes; 3 first place, 3 seconds, 8 thirds, and 1 fourth. Steve Carroll won the Long Jump at 18' 6" and Doug Atwood won the 120 Yard High Hurdles in 18.1 sec. The Collins two-mile relay team of Brad Moses, Guy Elliott, Bill Oswalt, and Mark Carver won in 9 min. 21 sec.

May 5, 1972. Several Journaland Boys and Girls track performers rate near the top in state track. Boys rankings: Steve Carroll, Collins, is second best in Class C Long Jump with 21' 6".
Girls rankings: Collins 440 Yd Relay is 1st at 50.9 secs. (Drake Relays). Diana Atwood is tied for the fourth best time in the 100 Meter Hurdles at 15.7 secs. Diana also ranks third best in the 220 Yd Low Hurdles at 31.2 secs. Deb Carroll is tied for fourth place in the 100 Yd Dash at 11.4 secs.
May 11, 1972. Girls Norsemen Relays in Story City should be remembered for some time by the Collins girls track team. The Clipperettes did not win the meet, but posted times in the meet that rank among the top five in the State in six different events. Diana Atwood has a time of 15.2 secs. in the 100 Meter Hurdles to rank 2nd, and the 200 Yd Hurdles at 30.5 secs. to rank 3rd. She anchors the 10 Flight Shuttle Hurdle Relay team, which has the 4th best time in the state 68.6. Deb Carroll ranks 2nd in the Long Jump at 17' 4 1/2 inches. Deb's 100 Yd Dash 11.4 secs. is 4th best; her 7.2 secs. in the 60 Yd Dash is 3rd best, and Deb's 26.2 secs. in the 220 Yd Dash is 4th best. The Collins 440 Yd Relay team owns the State's best time this year at 50.9 secs.--at the Drake Relays.
May 12, 1972. Girls District Track Collins girls qualified seven girls for the state track meet in seven events as they finished third in the district meet at Urbandale. Urbandale 1st place 53 points, 2nd Southeast Warren 50 points, 3rd Collins 47, 4th Pella Christian 33, 5th Knoxville 25, 6th Colfax 19.
Deb Carroll won the Long Jump, 17.4 1/2 inches, equaling her best of the season. Deb won the 60-Yd Dash in 7.2 secs.; also winning the 100 Yd Dash in 11.1 secs.; also winning the 220 Yd Dash 25.7 secs. The 220 Yd time and the 100 Yd time are the best in the state this season.
Diana Atwood qualified in the 100 Meter Hurdles at 15.1 secs., her fastest time of the season and just a tenth of a second off the fastest time in the state this year. Diana also qualified in the 220 Yd Hurdles with her fastest time this year 30.8 secs. The 10 Flight Shuttle Relay team turned in the best time in the state this year 1:07.7. Team members are: Mary Beth Kingman, Teresa Luing, Cathy Kingman, Diana Atwood.
The 400 Meter Shuttle Relay team of Rita Caulkins, Janice Findlay, Cathy Kingman, and Mary Beth Kingman tied for 4th place with the time of 56.5 secs. The 440 Yd Relay team of Teresa Luing, Janice Findlay, Cathy Kingman, and Mary Beth Kingman was 4th in 53.5 secs.
The state track meet will be held Friday and Saturday at the Drake stadium in Des Moines.
