September 13, 1971. Collins was eliminated from the sectional baseball tournament by Stratford 6-3. The hits were even at 7 a piece. Ken Caulkins had 7 strikeouts.

September 15, 1971. The Ta-Ma-Ja all-conference baseball teams included Bill Crab. Pitcher, and Rick McQuiston, second base as second team selections for Collins.

October 1, 1971. The Collins kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades, enjoyed a trip to the zoo in Des Moines Monday. Mrs. Niland and Mrs. Ose, teachers, were assisted by mothers Judy Morrison, Penny Weeks, and Carol Waterhouse.

October 8, 1971. Lunch menus - Oct. 11-15 Mon. Chili soup and crackers, relish, apple sauce, and cupcakes. Tues. Hamburger gravy over mashed potatoes, carrot sticks, cottage cheese, and peaches. Wed. Soup beans and ham, cornbread/syrup, lettuce salad, and pudding. Thurs. Tenderloin on bun, creamed peas, potatoes, fresh fruit, and cookie. Fri. Macaroni and cheese, peanut butter sandwich, cabbage, tomato-pepper salad, and apple goodie.

October 18, 1971. The 1930 graduating class held their first reunion on October 1 at Twin Anchors restaurant in Colo. All members were present except Mildred Brown, deceased. The event was planned by Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Dodd and Mrs. Genevieve Geisler in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Vasey of Oakland, California.

October 21, 1971. One of the prime topics of conversation at the State Teachers Convention in Des Moines is the oversupply of teachers. Dr. Bartels indicated the problem is almost certain to get worse before it can get better. Another aspect is public school attendance. Projections of future enrollments indicate that the crest of births in 1961 has already produced a national crest in elementary enrollment. One answer is to provide continued support to universal free public education. Better staffing practice, which demands better financial support for education can do much to alleviate anticipated future surpluses of teachers.

November 11, 1971. Students from Roland-Story, Gilbert, Colo, Maxwell, Ballard, Collins, and Nevada schools attended College Night at Nevada last Monday. Approximately 400 parents and students attended. Students and parents listened to speakers from three different colleges of their choice. Greatest interest was shown in ISU, UNI, and U of I. Each had about 175 students attending.

November 19, 1971. The girls athletic union reversed 17 years of policy by ruling that married students and mothers are now eligible for union sports, if they are otherwise eligible.

November 22, 1971. Due to unexpected enrollment in the 2nd grade, Collins has employed another teacher. Mrs. Alice Marie Jones teaches reading, math, language, and the arts to the 2nd graders in the morning. The first and second grades are combined for afternoon classes taught by Mrs. Donna Ose.

November 24, 1971. Girls Basketball The Collins girls trailed Baxter by one point at halftime and scored only 6 points in the 3rd quarter 87-67 loss to Baxter. Collins Scoring: Debbie Carroll 48, Jan Talburt 13, Jodee Holland 4, and Donna Barret 1.
