February 11, 1971. The proposed merger of the Maxwell and Collins school districts ran into a dead-end Wednesday night when a straw vote found Collins residents voting 2-1 against such a plan. The chairman of the Maxwell-Collins reorganization study committees presented their reports to about 150 people attending the meeting in the Collins School gymnasium. After each report was presented, a question and discussion session followed. Reports were given from committees - finance, curriculum, transportation and facilities. When all reports were concluded, a straw vote was taken by secret ballot. In response to the question; "Are you in favor of a merger of the Collins and Maxwell school districts?" 47 voted yes and 87 voted no, giving just a 35% favorable vote. Richard Dexter, Supt. of schools at Collins told the Journal that he does not expect the Collins board to take any further action on the subject. The meeting had been called so that Collins patrons could be heard from and could be informed on the progress of the committees who have spent several hours in studying the proposal.
