Collins came up with several 2nds and 3rds. Jerry Adams was 2nd in the shot put and 3rd in the discus. Bill Huntrods was 2nd in the 440 yd run and 3rd in the high jump; Craig Stratton was 2nd in the 2 mile run; Denny was 2nd in the 1 mile run; Stan Carroll was 2nd in the 180 yd. low hurdles; Doug Atwood was 2nd in the 100 yd. high hurdles; the Collins 440 and 880 yd. relay teams finished 2nd. May 16, 1970 Girls State Track Meet at Urbandale and Des Moines, Iowa: Cathy Carroll was at her best as she won the state long jump title 17' 7 _" (career best). Kay Bruce of Nishna Valley, who set an Iowa record with a jump of 19' 2" in the district and won last year's state title with a jump of 18' 2" was the choice for this year's title. After three preliminary jumps, Bruce had a 17' effort and Cathy Carroll was 2nd at 16' 9". Carroll went 17' 6" in her first final's jump and Bruce went 17' 4". Carroll's 2nd jump of the finals was her winning effort of 17' 7 _" and Bruce's jump was 16' 3" on her last jump. The running events are held at the Drake Track Stadium in Des Moines. Cathy Carroll also recorded the fastest qualifying time for the 60 yd. dash finals 7.2 seconds. Her best time of the season is 7.1 seconds.
