December 20, 1969 The Board of Education of Collins Community Schoolsannounced last night the hiring of Melvin D. Anderson of Ankeny to complete the year at Collins as Superintendent. Collins lost its superintendent, Wilbur Juhl, to a heart attack earlier in the school year. Anderson is a former employee of the Dept. of Public Instruction, and has recently retired. He was supt. of schools for 31 years in schools at Rolfe, Toledo, and Ankeny. For the past ten years he has been with the state dept. of education. Anderson is widely known in this area. The Collins Board announced, this is on a half-time basis and for six-months only. The plan has been approved by the County Superintendent and the State Dept. of Public Instruction.

Collins boys also contended with a 52% shooting by Maxwell, losing a high-scoring 79-68 game. Collins boys led at the 1st quarter 23-22, trailing at halftime 40-37. The game was tied at 53 up at the 3rd quarter mark and Maxwell poured in 26 points in the final quarter. December 26, 1969 Basketball - Collins Season Records: Girls 1-5, Boys 2-4.

January 9, 1970 Star Conference Basketball Tournament The Collins girls were first round losers to Steamboat Rock 80-56. The Clipperettes trailed 15-10 after one quarter and were unable to pick up the scoring pace for the 80-56 loss. "The Collins boys were completely outhustled," said Coach Garry Hamilton after the Clippers lost 58-45 to Green Mountain. Lineup: Mark Atwood 17 pts.; John Hale 9 pts.; Marv Huntrods 7 pts.; Rick McQuiston 7 pts.; Dick Huntrods and Bob Earles 2 pts. each; Ed Fitzgerald 1 pt. Team free throws: Made 7 of 23.

January 14, 1970 Basketball - A renewal of long-time rivalry between Maxwell and Collins packed the Collins gym with fans and they had plenty to cheer about. Maxwell girls won over Collins going away 75-57, but not before withstanding a Collins threat. Collins outscored Maxwell 9-2 to start the 3rd quarter, cutting a 42-31 halftime deficit to 44-40 midway through the 3rd quarter. Collins girls were unable to continue their scoring attack and Maxwell regained control of the game for the victory. Kathy Kingman played strong defensive game. Lineup: Cathy Carroll 36 pts. (16 free throws); Joan Altes 15 pts.; Jodee Holland 6 pts. Guards - Nancy Long, Teresa Luing, Nancy Mullihan, Kathy Kingman.

Collins boys limited Maxwell to 14 points in the 2nd half to earn their 3rd victory of the season and avenge an earlier defeat, winning 59-42. Maxwell took an early 10-2 lead and Collins came back with 12 points for a 14-12 1st quarter lead. Maxwell outscored Collins 14-2 during a four-minute stretch in the 2nd quarter for a 28-25 halftime lead. Collins took control of the game in the 2nd half, outscoring Maxwell 34-14 for the 59-42 victory. Coach Garry Hamilton was full of praise for the Clippers' defense in the 2nd half. Maxwell had only two offensive rebounds the entire second half.
