Track meet results: LDF - 84 pts.; Collins - 47 pts.; SEMCO - 44 pts.; Maxwell - 39 pts.; Bondurant - 26 pts.; Colo - 19 pts.; Garwin - 18 pts.; Mingo - 15 pts.; Baxter - 3 points. Collins placings: High Jump, 1st - Steve Holland (5' 5"); Long Jump, 2nd - Steve Holland (winner 20' 5"); Discus, 2nd - Mike Mullihan (winner 125 ` 6"); Pole Vault, 2nd - Bob Middleton, 3rd - Mark Atwood (winner 10' 1"); 120 yd. High Hurdles, 3rd Mike Kimberley (winner 16.5 secs.); 100 yd Dash, 4th ________ Fitzgerald, 5th Jerry Whitaker (winner 10.8 secs.); 880 yd. Relay, 5th - Collins (winning 1.41 secs.); 440 yd. Dash, 3rd Marvin Huntrods (winning 56.8 secs.); 880 yd Run, 1st Steve Holland, 2 min. 16 secs.; 440 yd. Relay, 4th Collins (winning 49 secs.); Mile Relay, 2nd - Collins (winning 3 min. 55 secs.).
May 8, 1968 Girls Ta-Ma-Ja Conference Track Meet. Team meet results: SEMCO - 110 pts.; LD - 73 pts.; Colo - 38 pts.; Collins - 27 pts.; Bondurant - 25 pts.; Maxwell - 23 pts.; Garwin - 23 pts.; Baxter - 20 pts.; Mingo - 8 pts. Cathy Carroll of Collins was the top individual among Story County girls as she won the 220 yd. Dash in 28.5 secs.; Long Jump at 14' 9"; was 2nd in the 60 yd. Dash and 3rd in the 100 yd. Dash. Karen Jacobson of Collins was the only other winner from Story County, winning the High Jump at 4" 5". These were the entire placings of the Collins girls track team in scoring 27 pts., 4th place.
May 10, 1968 Girls District Track Meet will be held at NESCO. There are 22 teams entered including Collins. Boys Class C District Track Meet will be held at Colo. There are 28 teams entered including Collins.
May 11, 1968 Baccalaureate is Sunday, May 26 at 8:00 P.M. in the school auditorium/gym with Rev. Paul Nelson as speaker. Commencement will be Tuesday, May 28, at 8:00 with Jack Shelley as speaker.
May 12, 1968 Boys Class C District Track Meet - The purpose of the meet is to qualify teams and individuals for the State Track Meet. Collins scored 9 points, placing 15th in a field of 30 teams in the meet; Pole Vault, 3rd Bob Middleton; Discus, 4th Mike Mullihan; 880 yd. Run, 4th Steve Holland; Long Jump, 5th Steven Holland; High Jump, 5th Steve Holland.
Girls District Track Meet - The purpose of the meet is to qualify teams and individuals for the State Track Meet. Cathy Carroll won the long jump at 15', 3", qualifying for the State Track Meet. Other placings -220 yd. Dash - 5th Cathy Carroll (winning 27.1); 880 yd. Medley - Collins team placed 5th (winning 2 mins.)
(Insert 2010: Cathy Carroll is the third Collins School girl to qualify for participating in State of Girls Iowa Athletic competition. The first Collins girl competing in State Athletic competition was Bonnie (Long) Severson in 1951 State free throw contest, placing 3rd. Sister Dorothy (Long) Dunshee competed in 1952 contest. The ironical aspect; Bonnie (Long) Severson was classmate (also close friends) for several years with Cathy Carroll's parents (Barbara [Kimberley] Carroll and Kenneth Carroll).
