Excerpts from Letter to the Editor - Dear Fellow Citizens, Two bills introduced in the Iowa State legislature during the past session stand to establish the state superintendent of public instruction has a virtual dictatorship over our school system. House bill 155, known as the "Standards Bill" and sponsored by the state department, gives the state superintendent authority to regulate all phases of the school system to the point that any or all schools now operating could be removed from the approved list and the students tuitioned to other districts. Many school districts attempting to reorganize have been unable to gain approval of the county board or state department because these people have other plans for the district.

March 18, 1965 School Doings - The student council met to discuss plans for attending a student council convention to be held this spring at Simpson College at Indianola.

The custodians have painted and spruced up the boiler room.

Collins seniors attended Court Day in Ames with the Bar Association of Story County conducting a mock trial with attorneys playing the part of witnesses and attorneys for the defense and prosecution. Judge Ed Kelley presided, explaining the procedure.

Grade News: 8th - The Home Ec class has been studying the kinds and cuts of meats. They have made several trips to the Collins Locker. In Science we are learning about the "Basic Four" and what vitamins, minerals and other nutrients do for our bodies. In History we are studying the machine and its effect on the business industry.

April 1, 1965 The Story County Teachers Association held their annual spring dinner at Gilbert on Wed., March 24. Attending to represent Collins Teachers Association were Mrs. Kern, Ose, McIntosh, Haas, Mr. Maxwell and Tayloe. An open house of the Gilbert school was held prior to and after the dinner meeting with Mr. Monatt, the guest speaker. He spoke on new developments in education.

April 8, 1965 School Doings - Saturday, May 1, Collins will be host to a Musical Festival that includes large bands and large chorus groups from the surrounding towns. It will start at 8:00 a.m. and conclude at 5:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend, free admission.

Student Council Executive Committee will attend the annual convention at Simpson College at Indianola, April 15.

The train will stop at Collins May 16 at midnight to pickup the seniors for their trip to Chicago. They will return home Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. David Maxwell will accompany the group.

Lunch Menu - Week of April 12: Mon. Dried beef gravy on biscuits or bread, cheese and carrot sticks, spinach, brownies, milk. Tues. Beef and noodles, lime Jell-O and cottage cheese, peanut butter sandwich, carrot stick, green beans, cookies, milk. Wed. Weiner winks, baked beans, cabbage and green pepper salad, rice pudding, milk. Thurs. Turkey and dressing, sweet potatoes, beets or tomatoes, cake, milk. Fri. Fish sticks, potato salad, buttered peas, apple crisp or prune cake, milk.
