United Nations Youth Conference: Have you ever sat all day and listened to college professors, United States representatIves, and United Nations associates talk about the United Nations? You should try it-perhaps you will learn something. Last Oct. 25, I attended the United Nations Youth Conference in Des Monies at the State Capitol. There were around 200 high school students and their chaperons present, about two from every county. We registered and had our first session in the chamber of the House of RepresentatIves. There was a short welcome by Major Charles Ives of Des Moines followed by a speech by Gov. Harold Hughes. For the remainder of the morning we had talks, questions, and answers by various branches of the U.N. In the afternoon session, we divided into discussion groups and each one talked about certain topics. In the morning session, everybody learned a little about a lot of things and with the afternoon session, we learned a lot about certain things dealing with the U.N. I thought the day proved to be very educational and would not hurt anyone to learn more about this great organization. (Reported by Mary Newton-attendee.)

Music News: As everyone has probably noticed, this time of year has brought bustling activity in the music room and has also brought all sorts of strange noises. I think everyone will agree that the rehearsals were both enjoyable and helpful. Our Christmas concert was well worth all of the time and effort that was contributed to it. I am sure every one enjoyed participating in the program and I know that all our parents enjoyed listening to it.

The music dept. was represented at the Collins November Parent Teachers Organization (P.T.O.) meeting by one of the girls' sextets who entertained the parents and teachers. Sextet members were: Carla, Karen, Jeanette, Bonnie Hale, Jane, Linda Tiffany. Sheila Johnson accompanied them on the piano.

Everyone remember the Carnival that's coming up in February! Mr. Groethe wants more entertainment acts for the musical portion of the carnival. Let's get busy! (Reported by Greg Robinson)
