SCHOOL YEAR 1961-62

September 1, 1961 Baseball - A seven-game ball schedule was announced by Coach Richard (Dick) Cory (Collins School Graduate). There will also be sectional tournament play. Sept. 6 - Clemons (T), 11 - NESCO (T), 12 - Roland (T), 19 - Clemons (H), 22 - Gilbert (T), 25 - Gilbert (H), 28 - Roland (H).

Collins' team staged a 6th inning uprising to squeak by NESCO 11-10 in the opening season game. NESCO had 9-2 lead going into the bottom of the 5th inning. Collins began a comeback scoring three runs in the 5th inning. Collins' 6th inning outburst started calmly on a walk to Gary Pointer, John Fitzgerald singled and both runners advanced on a NESCO error. Terry Huntrods walked to load the bases with no outs. Mort Dodd walked to force in one run, Galen Smith's single scored two runs, George Ballard's grounder and a NESCO error scored another run. Smith scored on Verlyn Noring's groundout and Ballard scored on a single by Bob Chittenden. Collins closed out the inning with an 11-9 lead and NESCO scored one run in the top of the 7th. Galen Smith pitched: Innings - 2, hits - 4, runs - 6, strikeouts - 0, walks - 4. George Ballard was relief pitcher. Innings - 5, hits - 9, runs - 4, strikeouts - 2, walks - 0. September 6, 1961 Baseball - The Clippers' record slipped to 1-1 with a 10-2 loss to Clemons. The game was 2-2 at the end of five innings. In the 6th Galen Smith walked four straight batters and the Clemons rally was under way to score six runs to break the game open for the 10-2 win. Jerry Crabb singled in the 3rd inning to drive in both of Collins' runs. Galen Smith pitched: Innings - 4, hits - 3, runs - 6, strikeouts - 4, walks - 9. George Ballard was relief pitcher. Innings - 2, hits - 5, runs - 4, strikeouts - 3, walks - 2. Collins team had four hits and six strikeouts and received eight walks. (Insert 2006: Lineup not found)

September 19, 1961 Baseball - Collins had their second win over NESCO 17-6. Terry Huntrods opened Collins' scoring in the 1st inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Collins broke the game open in the 2nd inning with Dalby, Altes, Pointer, Crabb, Fitzgerald, Dodd, Smith, Ballard, and (?) scoring for a nine-run inning. Collins also scored one run in the 6th and four in the 7th for the 17-6 win. Gary Pointer pitched: Innings - 6, hits - 6, runs - 6, strikeouts - 5, walks - 6. Jerry Crabb was relief pitcher. September 24, 1961 Baseball - Collins Clippers achieved a rare feat with the 5-2 victory over Roland to complete the season with a record of three wins and three losses. Crabb paced the hitting with 2 for 2. Clyde Dalby drove in the go-ahead run in the 5th inning and Collins added two more runs in the 6th for the 5-2 victory. Jerry Crabb pitched: Innings - 7, hits - 3, runs - 2, strikeouts - 10, walks - 4. Collins team collected 6 hits, 9 batters struck out, and team received eight walks. (Insert 2006: Lineup not found)
