February 25, 1960 Junior High News - This week we finished our basketball season. The girls defeated Maxwell 31-9 and the boys also won, a close game, 23-20 in overtime. Pat Kingman was the leading scorer for the season for the girls' team with 99 points and Verlyn Noring, the season leading scorer for the boys with 44 points.
Music News - Nineteen students went to the band clinic held at Drake University in Des Moines on February 5. Several students in the 5th through 8th grades are busy practicing instrumental solos that they will perform in the Grade School State Music Contest to be held March 5 at Drake University.

Grade News: 2nd - This week we wrote our Spelling words in cursive writing for the first time. The letter "f" gave us the most trouble. It has been 8 weeks since we first started cursive writing and we are now doing all of our writing by this method. We are keeping weather records for the month of February and learning many new words by doing this. These are "degree," "humidity," "precipitation," and "average." We are discovering what double numbers really mean and working hard to remember the addition and subtraction combination.
Girls Sectional Tournament held at Collins - Collins apparently had a bye in the first round and then was defeated by Rhodes in an overtime second round game 47-44. (Insert 2006: Lineup not found) Baxter defeated Rhodes in the consolation game 47-35. State center won the Sectional championship with a 45-43 win over Colfax.
