SCHOOL YEAR 1959-60

August 20, 1959 School begins August 31. Faculty: Ann Kern* - Kindergarten; Lenna Colyn - 1st;* Alta Kimberley - 2nd; Mrs. Anna Meeker - 3rd; Dorothy Phares - 4th; Mrs. Marjorie Heintz - 5th; Mrs. Muriel Hill - 6th; James Scott* - 7th and 8th Home Room; Glennus Hinders -Commercial and Counselor; Warren Skinner* - Music; Richard Cory - Coach and Social Science; Carolyn Ann Cords* - Home Ec. and Science; Robert Denton* - Librarian and Social Science; Robert Graves - Voc. Bus routes will run the same as last year, leaving the school at 7:50 a.m. and returning at near 8:30 a.m. Bus drivers are: D. O. Luing, Lloyd Campbell, Russell Christian, Wes Borts, Dick Keagle. School will take up at 9:00 a.m. and let out at 3:45 p.m. Hot Lunches are .25 plus .01 for each half-pint of milk. Hot lunch cooks, Darlene Etnier substituting for Helen Keagle who is ill; Vinnie Cory, substituting for Hannah Westcott who is ill, and Margaret Feige. Textbook rentalwill be $3.00 per year. To enter kindergarten the pupil must be five years by Nov. 15 and must provide a birth certificate. All Collins teachers will attend the County Institute at Ames on August 28 and local workshop at Collins on Saturday August 29. Enrollment is: Kindergarten - 24; 1st - 38; 2nd - 31; 3rd - 30; 4th - 25; 5th - 23; 6th - 23; 7th - 26; 8th - 14; total = 234. 9th - 21; 10th - 28; 11th - 25; 12th 19. High school - 93. Total Enrollment = 327. (Insert 2006: This is among the largest enrollment number of the Collins School.)

August 27, 1959 The Gazette has come home to its own printing plant after editor Carl Hoit disposed of his interest in the Maxwell newspaper this week. Mrs. Fred (Florence) Mead has consented to write some local news for the Gazette.

Junior High News - This year the girls have Home Ec under Mrs. Jackson and the boys have Shop under Mr. Jackson three times per week. There will be exploratory courses to show us what to expect in high school.

Baseball - Clemons defeated Collins 3-2 in the opening game of the fall season on the Collins diamond. Collins collected two runs on six hits while Clemons scored three runs on two hits, but received 16 walks. Walt Nichol pitched: Innings - 5, hits - 2, runs - 3, strikeouts - 4, walks - 13. Gary Borts pitched: Innings - 2, hits - 0, runs - 0, strikeouts - 2, walks - 3. Collins made two double plays and had only one error. Lineup: Gary Borts (ss-p) 1 hit; Galen Smith (2b-ss) 2 hits; Danny Long (cf-2b) 0 hits; Jim Nichol (c) 1 hit; Walt Nichol (p-cf) 0 hits; Jim Crabb (1b) 0 hits; George Ballard (3b) 1 hit; John Tiffany (rf) 1 hit; Bob Dodd 0 hits.
