May 21, 1959 Senior Trip - Sixteen seniors from Collins joined by the Maxwell seniors traveled to Chicago May 15 and 16. After arriving in Chicago at 10:00 a.m., the students were taken on a special tour of Marshall Field and Company. The afternoon was free, so many of the students went shopping or visited interesting sights in the downtown area such as the Prudential building, which is 40 stories high and can view a large part of the city. Friday evening, the group ate supper at the Chezparee, one of Chicago's well-known night spots. Johnny Mathis, popular singer, was the main performer in the show. The tour of Chicago began at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning with stops at the Lincoln Park Zoo, Chinatown, the Aquarium, the National History Museum, the Science and Industry building. At 2:00 a.m. Sunday the Collins group arrive back home, leaving a few hours to get ready for the Baccalaureate service that evening.

Journalism Award - Word was received that Edward Smith received honorable mention award in the Journalism Contest sponsored by the Sigma Delta Chi at Iowa State College (University). Over 500 entries were submitted in the competition by high schools across the state.

At the State Open Weightlifting meet at Davenport on May 2 Edward Smith topped all entries in his weight class to win first place. The event covered three Olympic lifts with barbells. To qualify for this event, the entrant must triple his body weight in three lifts. Edward was in the 123 pound class, lightest weight class in the meet. His three lifts were: The "press" for 120 lbs. (which was his body weight at the time of the meet); the "snatch" for 115 lbs., and the "clean and jerk" for 160 lbs.
