March 27, 1947 Grade News: Primary - Several boys and girls from our room have been missing because of flu and Chicken Pox. One day there were fourteen absent. First and Second - Several students were absent because of flu and Chicken Pox. Fifth - In history, we are studying the discovery and exploration of America. Sixth - We are reading the history of Italy. It is a very old nation and has made many valuable contributions to the world.

April 3, 1947 Collins High School took part in the music contest at Nevada. Soloist Burrel Browns placed 2nd on his baritone solo and the girls' glee club placed 1st. This enables them to take part in the State contest at Independence in late April. The girls' trio placed 3rd. Mrs. Jack Stone was the accompanist.

Collins track squad of 12 members participated in the State indoor track meet. They did well in preliminary heats, but did not place in the finals.

Basketball Conference Results - The members of the Collins basketball squads traveled to Cambridge for a program honoring the South Story Conference. The program featured xylophone solo and several selections by the Slater Girls' sextet and trio. Mr. Peer, Collins principal, the Conference secretary presented the all-conference teams and awarded conference championships. The girls' championship trophy went to Slater with an undefeated conference season. Cambridge and Slater boys were co-champions of the Conference. Collins players receiving recognition: Girls - Wanda Anderson (f) and Carol Atwood (g) were on the second team. Dolores Gardner (f), Lois Pritchard (f), and Doris Caulkins (f) received honorable mention. Boys - Gene Atwood (g) was on the first team. Ronnie Halterman (f), Marlin Long (c), and Donald Huntrods (g) were on the second team. Ed Chisholm, head of the Girls' Basketball Union, gave us some of the highlights and advancement of girls' basketball during past years. Babe Tiesling, coach at Central College, presented an interesting speech on the game of basketball and the highlights of boys' games. The evening was closed with a movie of the Danbury and Iowa City game of the preceding year's boys' state tournament at Iowa City. (Insert 2005: Danbury was a very small school near Sioux City area competing very well against the large Iowa City school.

April 10, 1947 The Senior Class Play (Faith, Hope and Flarity) a comedy in three acts, will be presented. The cast is: Lois Pritchard, Gene Stoneberg, Shirley Johnson, Margie Shearer, Romaine Milligan, Wanda Anderson, Clayton Neese, Jack Moore, Dick Halterman, Harold Mullihan, Donald Huntrods, Joyce Maxwell, and Dean Kitchen.

April 17, 1947 Collins baseball team defeated Huxley 12-6 on the local diamond.

The Collins track team won first in the mile-medley relay race at Marion. They placed third in the Class C schools division of the meet. Medley team members: Ronnie Stratton, Gene Atwood, Harold (Barney) Mulllihan, and Bob Baker.

Collins baseball team came up on the small end of a 4-3 score with Nevada. Nevada scored one in the 6th and three in the 7th to win. Halterman pitched, allowing nine hits and striking out eight. Long was the catcher. Dick Halterman and Don Huntrods had one hit each for Collins.
