Career wins = 266 with Best Seasons: 1939 = 24 wins, 1940 - 27 wins, 1941 - 25 wins; 1946 - 26 wins, 1947 - 30 wins, 1951 - 22 wins. Other career stats: Won 62% games, Innings pitched - 3827, hits allowed - 3271, strikeouts - 2581, earned run average = 3.25 per game. Nickname "Rapid Robert" for his fastball and wildness to make batters watchful [no batting helmets or other body protection]. Elected to Baseball Hall of Fame 1962, first year eligible for selection. Very few "Hawkeye State" players have been elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame, at this 2004 date.)

November 9, 1939 Basketball Coach Gowen chose 15 men, instead of 11, for regular basketball practice. These are Floyd Carver (41), Jack Fertig (42), Wendell Coles (42), Dick Holland (40), Chase Westcott (41), Ronny Hand (40), Bill Stoneberg (41), Chuck Kimberley (42), James Kimberley (40), Joe Anderson, Dorrell Taylor (43), Bill Atwood (43), Ronald Johnston, John Kingman (43), and Jack Stratton (42). There will also be off-squad practice time announced from time to time to let the boys who want to practice more than just during p. t. periods during the winter.

Our superintendent, Mr. Holmes, was chosen president of the consolidated schools of Iowa. Congratulations!

November 30, 1939 The sixth grade won the spelling contest last week while the third grade was the loser. The contest wasvery close with the fifth grade falling behind only a half-point. All four groups averaged over 75 per cent accuracy.

Basketball Collins won both their games from Rhodes Friday night: 64-20 for the girls, and the boys 19-12. Minnie Mae Sheibley made 36 points for Collins and Jeanette Haas made 16 points for Rhodes. In the boys game Holland made 9 points for Collins and Guerert made 6 points for Rhodes.

Assembly The assembly Wednesday consisted of two numbers "Within a Dreaming Harbor" and "Sleepers Wake" by the girls' glee club; a talk on Hawkeye Boys' State by Dick Holland, and a talk on Improvements in Behavior by Chase Westcott.

Some students have been recently seen writing lengthy themes on Gum Chewing, etc. as a result of being caught at this offense. Some are preparing talks to be given in assembly - helping others to profit by their experiences.

The typewriters moved to the back of the auditorium: The typing and study hall class can now be in charge of the same teacher. They were formerly in the shop in the high school building o the middle level in the long room on the west side of the building.
