May 4, 1939 Collins Beats Dowling Collins High pushed over five runs in the fifth inning to hand Dowling of Des Moines its first baseball defeat of the season, 9 to 5, on the Birdland park diamond. Dick Holland, Collins' right-hander, set the Irish down with seven hits as his mates gathered nine off Gene Van Dyck. Collins' big fifth inning came as a result of three hits, a walk and an error and a hit batman. Lowell Carver wound up the scoring by cleaning the bases with a triple after the walk, hit batman and a fielder's choice and put two aboard. The Irish made a comeback attempt with two down in the last inning with a hit by Bob Duff, a walk and an error pushed one run across, but Dick Holland wound up the threat by striking out Gene Lalley. This victory is the third in four starts for Collins, Roosevelt of Des Moines giving the boys their only defeat. Collins Loses to McCallsburg Collins lost to McCallsburg 4 to 3 in the third round of the county tournament, there, Monday afternoon. Collins led 2 to 0 until the sixth inning. At that time McCallsburg scored 4 runs from 3 hits and 2 errors. Holland pitched for Collins, allowing 3 hits, while Olson went the way for McCallsburg, also allowing 3 hits.

The annual Junior-Senior banquet took place Friday night in the gymnasium. The decorations gave the effect of a roof garden and the program was very informal. A delicious three-course dinner was served by the mothers of the juniors, after which most of the high school students and faculty danced.

May 11, 1939 With Commencement Exercises for the class of 39, Collins High school, set for Friday evening, May 19, that date will mark the finish of a week of great activity on the part of students and faculty. Jordan Larson, superintendent of the Ames schools, has been secured to deliver the commencement address, in the high school auditorium. Following is the class roll: Lowell D. Carver, Margaret Jane Fish, Minnie Loo Fish, Nikolene K. Hansen, Hansel S. Hanson, Dorothy M. Hennick, Jean Kimberley, Wilma Mae Kimberley, Wendell Luing, Dean Mabe, Doris L. McElwee, Katherine M. Pritchard, James E. Quinn, Keith E. Shearer, Harriet Sheibley, Velda M. Shickell, Vernon Shonk, Yvonne Signs, Marietta Struthers, Leonora A. Vasey. Class colors are green and pink; class flower, pink carnation; and class motto is, "2XL." )

The Baccalaureate service will be held in the Collins Church of Christ Sunday evening. May 14, at 8 o'clock. The Rev. Chas. R. Neel, pastor of that church, will deliver the message to the graduates, the program for the eve-being as follows: Processional-Mrs. Elizabeth Forbes; Invocation- Rev. Ida I. Roberts; "Come, Thou Almighty King" -Congregation; Scripture Reading - Rev. L. F. Woolson; "Somebody's Knocking" - Girls' Glee Club; Address: "Youth at the (Point of a Question"-Rev. Chas. Neel; "Prayer Perfect" - Mixed Chorus; Benediction - Rev. L. F.I Woolson; Recessional - Mrs. Forbes.

The Senior class play will be presented tomorrow (Friday) evening. The annual School Achievement Night will be observed at the auditorium next Tuesday evening, May 16. The annual-banquet of the Collins Alumni association will take place in the gymnasium, following the commencement exercises, on Friday, May 19. This affair always is largely attended.
