New Idea for Assembly The high school and junior high students are participating in a spelling tournament, held during assembly periods on Wednesday mornings. The presidents of each class drew for competitors. In the first round, the ninth grade won over the seventh and will compete with the tenth grade in the third round. The eleventh and twelfth grades will spell in the second round. Results of each round will be published weekly.

March 30, 1939 Music Groups Made Good Showing The music groups of the high school went to Marshalltown Friday and Saturday to the sub-district music contest. The results were: Girls' Glee Club--Superior; Boys' Glee Club-Excellent; Girls' Sextet-Superior; Contralto Solo - Dorothy Titus-Excellent; Mezzo-Soprano Solo, Juanita Bates-Superior; Soprano Solo, Jeane Tipton- Superior; Baritone Solo, Richard Holland-Good; Bass Solo, Hansel Hanson- Good; Snare Drum Solo, George Kimberley-Excellent; Saxophone Solo, Minnie Loo Fish-Good; Those receiving Superior will compete in the district contest at Eagle Grove.

Baseball got under way with about 16 coming out for regular practice. The casualties so far are two broken bats, a few sore arms, and Harshaw managed to hit one over the fence after four nights practice. The first game is April 7 with Farrar.

April 20, 1939 Vocational Agriculture Five apple trees at the home of Lowell Carver were worked on by the Farm Crops pruning squad last Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday afternoon a field trip of inspection was made to the new orchard of 5 to 7-year-old trees at the home of James Kimberley to observe how some of the problems of setting out a new orchard have been met.

Baseball According to announcement made by Mr. Harshaw baseball season is underway. Last Thursday Collins was defeated by the Roosevelt Roughriders of Des Moines by a score of 5-2. Dick Holland pitched a good game, but lacked support. Four hits were secured by the home team. (Insert 2004: Box score not found)

April 27, 1939 Baseball The Collins baseball boys came through their first game of the county tournament with Shipley last Thursday evening at Collins in grand style. They won 6 to 1. Dick Holland pitched a good game, allowing 1 hit, striking out 11. Collins had 6 hits, which included home runs by Hansel Hanson and Keith Shearer, and triples by Chase Westcott and James Quinn. This was the first victory of the season. "Second Round" The Collins boys took their second game of the county tournament in stride when they shut out Maxwell 6-0 at that place Monday. Holland pitched for Collins, striking out 15, Collins had 6 runs, 6 hits and 2 errors, Maxwell had no runs, 3 hits and 6 errors. The next game is with Dowling, Thursday.
