Alumni Banquet. The annual banquet of the Collins High School Alumni association was held in the gymnasium of the high school building on May 27 following the commencement exercises. There were 103 seated at the banquet table to enjoy the bounteous two course dinner which was served. Members of the Junior and Sophomore classes acted as waiters. During the course of the dinner, music was furnished by “Jack’s Crackerjacks.”

Following the dinner the toastmaster, Harold Carver, took charge of the program, which consisted of many clever stories by the toastmaster, welcoming speech by the president of the Alumni association, Lowell Carver; response by Verle McCord; a short talk on the “Horse and Buggy Age” by Ralph McCord; vocal solo by Mrs. Curtis Marsh, and a few remarks by C. G. Vasey. Following the program, the president called a business meeting and the following officers were elected for 1928: President – Oliver Shearer; Vice President – Arlo Heinrich; Secretary – Mary Holmes; Treasure – Mrs. Harley Gearhart.

1927 Recallings of 1927 Graduate: (Insert 2003) Attended Mt. Olive Country School (southwest corner of Collins Township), 1st through 5th grade. Changed to Collins town school in 6th grade (fall 1920). The classes were in 1909 building. (The new High School Building was constructed during 1921 and occupied January 1922.) Grades one through 8 were called Grade School and grades 9 through 12 were High School. There were no grades called Junior High.

The students remained in one room for all classes for 6th through 8th grades. Clara Signs was 8th grade teacher. The High School grades, 9 through 12, changed rooms for different subject classes. High school teachers recalled were; Miss Shomler – English and Dramatics, Earl Cope – Mathematics, Mr. Hollingsworth – Supt. and taught Geography and History. Mrs. Hollingsworth – Physical Education and Girls Basketball Coach. School days were Monday through Friday, hours 9:00 A. M. – 4:00 P.M. with lunch/recess 12 noon – 1:00 P.M.. Students could buy hot lunch (uncertain if served full year) or bring lunch from home. The High School building had individual lockers for students to place books, coats, etc. No school dress code.

Basketball games customarily played on Friday nights with girls’ games preceding boys’ games, attendance was very good. The schools played were: Colo, Cambridge, Maxwell, Huxley, Kelley, Farrar, Slater and Zearing. The girls’ team was six players with two players in each of the three courts. Partial listing of team members: Forrest Crabb, Dola Crabb, Esther Ozmun, Anna Marsha, Zelma Smith, Zola Gilley, Irene Dodd. No school cheerleaders. Extra Curricular activities were: Basketball, Glee Club (music), School Class Plays, and baseball added for boys.
