desired that our reading should be improved through the lower grades and junior high school. On Feb. 10th another series of tests were given and we have the following results: Grade 3 – Tests were not given; Grade 4 - .2 below normal but showing a gain of 1.5 points; Grade 5 – 1.4 below normal, but showing a gain of 1.4 points; Grade 6 – One point above normal but showing a gain of .1 points; Grade 8 - .2 points below normal showing gain of .5 points.

This study shows, without doubt, that the efficiency has been improved in all subjects as reading is the key to all our school work. Each grade has shown some improvement while a few have made great strides. If this improvement continues until this time next year, we will find every grade above our national standard. Much enthusiasm is being shown and the teachers are resolved to try, even harder, from now on.

Basketball - Collins High split a double header Friday night with Colo. The Collins girls won by the score of 55 to 6 while the boys lost by a score of 27 to 12.

February 24, 1927 Preliminary Declamatory Contest. The preliminary contest, the first of the series of district contests, will be held in the Collins High School Auditorium on Friday evening, February 25th, at 7:45 o’clock. The program is as follows:

To the Firefly – Charlotte Vasey; Oratorical: Velma Pitcher - Thy Neighbor; Dramatic: Zelma Smith - Yellow Butterflies. Humorous: Mary McWherter - Boy at the Circus; Vocal Duet: Alice Heintz and Zola Gilley. Schools represented: Collins, Maxwell, Melbourne, and Rhodes.

February 24, 1927 Loses Double Header Collins seemed to be off form Friday night when Slater beat them, the girls’ score was 38 to 8 and the boys’ score was 20 to 5.

March 3, 1927 Collins High boys team was defeated in the Story County Basketball Tournament at Huxley Saturday. Gilbert beat Collins by a score of 42 to 9. Gilbert was not stopped until the final round, when Roland beat them 8 to 6. The Gilbert-Collins game marked the last high school game for Linn Mills, Alva (Tiny) Hand, Forrest Brouhard, Floyd Lafferty, and Verle McCord. These seniors did a great job for the team and other years that they have participated in high school athletics.
