January 6, 1927 Coach Applegate gave his team a treat by taking them to the dedication program of the new Drake University Field House, Des Moines, Iowa the main feature of the evening being the Drake-Kansas game. Among the dedication speeches was one by Gov. John Hammill. In the first basketball game Drake lost to Kansas 13 to 27; in the second game Still won from Buena Vista by a large score.
January 20, 1927 Collins Loses Double Header. Collins boys and girls bowed in defeat to the flashy McCallsburg teams by the scores of 42-27 and 25-19 respectively. The girls game at first seemed to show victory when the forward combination traveled at old time speed while the team functioned like clock work behind them, but the persistent floor work of McCallsburg soon gained them the lead, and the sensational battle that followed left Collins at the small end. Until the last quarter Collins was always in the threatening distance, but a rampage of the invaders in the closing session gave them an insurmountable lead.
The McCallsburg boys forged into the lead early in the game although was small. Stonewall defense featured the entire first half and a score of 9 to 5 ended the half. The local boys flashed their brilliant basketball of the season to the third quarter attaining a one-point lead but they failed to maintain the pace and yielded several fatal baskets in the final quarter. January 27, 1927 The Story County Basketball tournament will be held at Huxley on February 25th and 26th. As Collins is entered in this tournament you should begin to think about going.
Boys Lose Two, Girls Win Two: Displaying the best beginning thus far this season, Collins girls captured a hard fought battle from Gilbert Wednesday night by a score of 26 to 17. Close guarding in both teams and excellent floor work featured the contest. Collins’ supremacy lay in the deadly basket eye of the forwards.
The boys functioned like high speed motors against a team ten miles faster than greased lightening. Excellent passing would work the ball down the floor to Halterman who would invariably tally. The spurt in the last quarter by Gilbert made the margin of victory 40 to 27.
